Are You Breathing Correctly?
Breathing is an involuntary action. I would make a bold statement and say that the majority of people rarely notice their breath at all. I only became aware of my breath after I started practicing yoga. It wasn't on how I was breathing it was just awareness, more like, "Oh, I am breathing. I can feel myself breathing.’
Breathing should be the most important part of your Ashtanga practice. The breath is what steadies your mind, creates lightness in your body and, believe it or not, protects you from injury. Learning to integrate the correct breathing technique during your practice requires time, patience and effort.
In the video below, well-known teacher David Swenson explains the correct type of breathing for Ashtanga yoga. He explains what ujjayi breathing is and how to engage your bandhas. I hope you find it as useful as I did. Enjoy!
Lots of love,
