Don't Believe Everything You See
Ah, social media. Such a blessing...and a curse.
Seems obvious, doesn’t it, to not believe everything you see in your newsfeed? But in the moment, we often struggle to put those images into perspective.
That flawless handstand picture you scrolled past, feeling a twinge of shame because your handstand isn’t as good? Yeah, that was a screen shot of a video that lasted a full five seconds before she fell over. She’s still working on it, too.
That yoga superstar you follow on Instagram who seems to have everything you’ve ever dreamed of? She’s been working on her practice everyday for over a decade. She has put in the work to be where she is. She has struggles and flaws just like you.
I could list dozens of similar stories, but you get the point. Please remember that those images and short videos never tell the whole story. There is an entire human life behind them, full of heartbreak and triumph, just like yours. Someone you follow may seem to have it all—a perfect body, a beautiful yoga practice, and a glamorous life. But they don’t. They have body images issues just like you. They struggle in their yoga practice just like you. They have complicated problems just like you.
They are human, and deal with everything that goes along with it.
Keep it all in perspective. Their grass isn't greener. Their life isn't better.
Take a deep breath, enjoy the pretty pictures, and keep on scrolling secure in the fact that you are not less than.
