Go Ahead and Post Your Yoga Selfies
Perhaps I'm a little late to the party, but I've recently had a change of heart about social media. Where I once saw the process of sharing "yoga selfies" as somewhat un-yogic and egocentric, I now see it as a powerful tool to connect with others and build intentional communities. As humans, we like to SEE one another, especially our faces; that's how we connect! It makes sense that sharing that type of content is necessary if we want to reach people where they are listening--on social media networks.
Personally, I'd also been searching for the best way to channel my creative energy over the last several months. I was spinning my wheels trying to divide my time between my "yoga life" and my "creative life." A few weeks ago, it dawned on me: why couldn't I apply my creativity to my mission to share yoga? Taking photos, videos, and writing about yoga seems like the perfect solution.
Though as yogis we work to keep our egos in check, I definitely believe it is possible for us to engage in social media in a healthy way as long as we remain mindful and honest about our motivations. Asana is the most visually compelling part of what we do, but we can also find creative ways to spread the message that yoga is about more than making shapes (something I am still trying to figure out myself).
There will always be people in life who don't understand or incorrectly infer your intentions, and that's ok. You can't let them prevent you from living your truths and fulfilling your mission. So if you feel called to do so, I hope you join me in using social media platforms for positive reasons like inspiring and connecting with others!
