It seems we receive two messages as yoga students. We are told to both listen to our body and push past our boundaries. We are told that yoga isn’t about making perfect shapes but then adjusted when our shape is less perfect. We are told to never rush the journey but then pressured to never get too comfortable. Raise your hand if this has ever made you feel crazy!
So, which is correct? Do we push or not?
For me, the real lesson is learning to be brave enough to find out for ourselves. We have to learn to trust ourselves, but first we must learn to be trustworthy! This yoga is asking us to cultivate such an intimate, loving, all encompassing relationship with our body and soul that we can hopefully, eventually, learn to respect our boundaries without coddling our weaknesses. We can learn to push past limits without being a slave to the ego.
We must spend countless hours on our mats, getting to know ourselves in a way no one else really can. Through trial and error, setbacks and accomplishments, we earn our own trust. Through the journey of yoga, we can learn to not deceive ourselves and stifle our growth, but to truly do what it right for us in that moment.
I’m not quite there yet, but at least I haven’t given up.
I’ll be putting my time in on my mat again tomorrow.
