Recently, a friend of mine shared this video on Facebook. I couldn't agree more that empathy is a crucial skill to develop in terms of happy relationships and peaceful societies.
For me, empathy has been one of the greatest lessons of yoga. When we use the Tristana method of asana, breath, and drishti to focus our mind, we clear out the "junk" that clouds our perception. When my mind is clear, it's easier to put myself in others' shoes.
Operating from empathy gives us greater peace because we do not take others' actions personally. Rather, we understand each individual has their own journey and samskaras that account for their actions.
To approach others with such empathy requires an egoless state, so anytime we practice it, we are doing our yoga "in the real world" beyond our mats.
Have you practiced empathy today?
