Yoga and Social Media
Greetings yogis! This month, the ladies of Finding Isvara are participating in our first Instagram yoga challenge, #TheGratitudeChallenge with @kinoyoga and @beachyogagirl! As such, I thought it was a good time to share this amazing article written by Shanna Small for the Ashtanga Picture Project: Did Social Media Ruin Yoga?
I couldn't agree more with Shanna's thoughts that social media is just a tool; how we choose to use it is what makes it positive or negative. Also I love how she ties in yoga philosophy to encourage us to support those we feel are spreading good messages, and ignore those we feel are spreading negative ones.
In the spirit of the same self-discovery we seek through yoga, I would also venture to add that we can learn a lot about ourselves by observing our personal reactions to social media posts. Does a post cause you joy? Envy? Annoyance? Self-deprecation? I feel all of these at various times, and I think it is good to explore the source of those feelings when they come up. Positive feelings usually come from a place of love, while negative ones usually come from fear or lack mentality. So, social media can actually be a great mirror for those of us engaged in self-study.
I hope you check out our Instagram account this month to follow our challenge pics, and join in on the fun if you like! This month, we're focusing on gratitude, which is a wonderfully positive message :)
With love and gratitude,
